Driver CPC Periodic Training: What’s in it for me?

As the September 2013 deadline for PCV drivers to complete their Driver CPC Periodic Training requirement fades away behind us now, all eyes are fixed on the approaching September 2014 deadline for HGV drivers with acquired rights.

Many HGV drivers facing the looming deadline are seasoned drivers with many years of experience under their belts, and in the face of spiralling costs for CPC periodic training may be asking themselves, ‘what’s in it for me?’

The Driver CPC in both its incarnations (both the Initial and the Periodic training requirements) was designed to bridge the vast chasm in driver skill levels. Despite the many rumours circulating that it’s a Government cash-cow designed to squeeze the haulage industry even further, there have been positive comments from drivers undertaking the training. Jason Cauley, a Trainee of The LGV Training Company, recently spent 14 hours in a classroom on one of our specialist ‘Direct Access’ Courses;

‘At first, I wasn’t sure about periodic training. I thought it was a waste of time, a waste of money – I just didn’t really understand the point to be honest. I paid for this course because it seemed like good value for money based on what I’d seen elsewhere, but I wasn’t looking forward to it.

‘On the first day of the course I was tired and grumpy and I thought ‘I can’t really be bothered!’ I went along with a face like thunder, but by the time I’d been there about half an hour I realised I’d had completely the wrong attitude.

‘The CPC Trainer was really friendly and had us all laughing and joking within a few minutes of arriving – there was coffee, biscuits, and of course all the other people on the course were in the same situation as me, so there was some good banter!

‘I think the thing that surprised me the most was the course content itself – it was full of funny video clips, jokes, illustrations and photos which kept me interested in what I was learning.’

Jason’s story isn’t unique – hundreds of Trainees every week are finding out that Periodic Training doesn’t have to be boring and humdrum, and that no matter how experienced you are, there’s a course module to suit you.

The LGV Training Company has a nationwide network of qualified, experienced Instructors who will deliver the training modules you need at a School near you. We’ve worked hard to make sure that our training is interesting, relevant and fun. Give us a call and we’ll discuss your options with you. It doesn’t need to be complicated.

Our Direct Access Course counts as 14 hours towards this training, but if you would like to speak to an adviser about other options for your Periodic Training, give us a call on 0800 0744 007 to discuss, or click here if you’d like to request an instant quote or a call back.
